Optimistic Forecast for Puyallup and Sumner in 2015

Kent Hojem, Chamber Board Chairman, emcees annual breakfast
The Chamber's first Economic Forecast and Rising Star Awards Breakfast on January 22nd presented an optimistic outlook for Puyallup and Sumner in 2015.  Puyallup shared information about new car dealerships planned in downtown and reported an 11% increase in sales tax in 2014.  Housing prices and sales are slightly on the rise in our communities and continued Sound Transit growth includes additional trains in 2016 and 2017.  Sumner presented information on the new YMCA which is scheduled to open this summer and will serve 22,000 people as well as information about new development in the industrial area.

A big Chamber thank you to our presenting sponsor, Puget Sound Energy, our title sponsor, Columbia bank, our investor sponsor, Pierce County, and all of our attending members for supporting our event.  See you next year.

Annual Putt Putt Classic in Downtown Puyallup

The Chamber Putt Putt Classic will be your opportunity to mega-network on a Friday afternoon while putting through nine of your local businesses. Participants will have access to businesses they might not normally interact with. For example you can:
  • Demonstrate your putting skills in CEO Kent Hojem’s office at the Washington State Fair
  • Visit Good Samaritan Hospital for a non-medical reason to putt and chat with Glenn Kasman
  • Or putt into a suite at the Fairfield Inn so you can better describe the lodging amenities with your favorite business customer.
The Putt Putt Classic will begin and end at Bill Korum’s Puyallup Nissan starting with registration at 12:30pm. You’ll putt your way through downtown Puyallup from 12:30 to 4:30pm and then enjoy a fun after party at Nissan.
Don’t miss the opportunity to mix business with golfing fun. There will even be awards at the after party for best score….and best dressed golfer in argyle.

Mt. Rainier Coffee Company and The Cheese Shop

A Chamber "high five" to Mt. Rainier Coffee Company for their holiday coverage on PCTV regarding their coffee and business model.  Board Member, Rod Stephens, owner of two local businesses, The Stephens Law Firm and Mt. Rainier Coffee Company, gave a great interview about not only his coffee products, but our communities as well.

The Chamber Kicks Off 2015

Happy New Year to all of our Chamber members.  We are looking forward to a busy 2015.

January 12th kicks off the legislative session in Olympia and that means more involvement with our legislators in advocating for completion of SR167 as well as other issues that impact our businesses.

On a congressional level, we are also involved in advocating for JBLM against the proposed reduction of troops, as well as the Affordable Care Act's impact on our business community.

Locally, 2015 will be a year of city council elections for both Puyallup and Sumner and we will be hosting a candidate forum at our October luncheon to provide an opportunity for our members to hear from the candidates about business issues.

The U.S. Open is coming to Chambers Bay and Pierce County June 15-21.   The USGA has advised that approximately 60-70% of all general ticket holders will be parking in Puyallup at the Washington State Fairgrounds parking lots.  Our Chamber is hosting a concierge program to refer visitors to our local businesses.  We estimate anywhere from 8,000 to 25,000 people per day will be visiting Puyallup.

If you are interested in learning more about our business advocacy efforts or have an issue impacting your business that you would like to have included in our discussions, please contact the Chamber or join us at our Government Affairs meetings the first Tuesday of every month, 7:30am at the Chamber office.

On behalf of our Chamber, we wish all of our members much success in 2015.
